What has your pc spec increased from?
What was changed?
Remember that render times are dependent on a. plethora of factors e.g timeline duration, type of effects used, motion blurs etc, footage res (if used), etc etc so we need to look at :
1. What your project is i.e what is on the timeline
2. Comp settings
3. Output module settings
Post screen grabs or a vid if possible and we will work from there

A lot of the work After Effects has to do is sequential, so it won't be possible to use all the cores all the time (unless you render to frame sequences and fire up several copies of the render engine). AE simply isn't optimized for modern mass-cored workstations.
Ram was increased from 16GB to 32GB, roughly same speed RAM.
Here's the comp timeline, it's 30 secs long:
the two image files are 5k x 3k, which could be an issue (but lets be real here, they shouldn't be these days).
The videos are 1080p each. All layers are being moved in position slightly. Apart from this and the displayed screen modes, there are no effects being used. I had them on an adjustment layer, which I then disabled.
The output is on "Best Settings/Lossless". It's being rendered to a third hard drive. I have AE running on one SSD, my cache on another SSD and it's being rendered to a HDD.
Currently the render is set to take about an hour....is this not a crazy amount of time for a 30 second video with basically no effects??
Dave you are absolutely on the money about this. Hoping the Adobe engineers will begin to look into changing the architecture to allow for using parallel processing soon
So as part of my upgrade I went from a 4 core processor @ 4Ghz to a 6 core (12 virtual core) processor @3.8GHz. Am I right in saying this is effectively a downgrade for After Effects?
Your settings look ok.
Your bottleneck is rendering out to a standard drive but even so 1 hour is too long.
What seems to be affecting this is the compositing (blend modes) between layer 4 & 5
Whats on the solid and adjustment layers?
I tried rendering out to the SSD but it made little difference. I do think it's slower when going past the blend mode layers, but even so I'm 90% sure I could get a faster render in photoshop (besides, these are very simple operations).
The adjustment layer has a myriad of effects on it, but it has been disabled so I'm not sure how that would make a difference...am I wrong here?
The solid is a simple black solid that has been crudely used for fade in and fade out.
If the adjustment layer with effects has been turned off the render should be far quicker.
Are your settings here all in order?
Not really a downgrade because the clock speed on that CPU is almost identical.
Its actually beneficial to have upgraded but you want see anything thats blisteringly different speed wise

Are both AE and AME running the latest version? Dynamic Link gets updated every version, so you need to be running 2019 (and even then, the latest update of each is recommended) of both applications.
If you use CC2019, yes its a bug and many user report this to adobe and it must be fixed in the next release, so your only solution is to export from AE directly than converted you output to h.264 on AME

I'll look at using a Particle System where each name is used as a particle. I will also break down the task into 10 equal parts, with 100 names per part - then combine these parts after they have been rendered.
Agreed on this. Render out of AE until this bug is fixed
After Effects removed most of the consumer-level Quicktime codecs with the CC2018 release. Installing QT7 is irrelevant, Adobe stopped using those runtimes.
Convert the file to another format, or downgrade After Effects.
Hi,
I am working with After Effects CC (v16.0). I'm ready to render my composition but no matter what I do, After Effects seems to skip some of my time remapped key frames. I've tried purging the memory/cache, playing around with the render settings, changing frame blending and motion blur, everything else that has come up in google but nothing seems to work. The files I'm time remapping are illustrator files and everything plays fine in the preview. (Also on macOS Mojave v10.14 if that helps).
Here is one section of the rendered video to show what is happening. This character has four different displays: looking left mouth open, left mouth closed, right mouth open, right mouth closed. The right mouth closed frame isn't displaying in the rendering. If you need some more information let me know, very confused and lost at this point
