As I mentioned before, your attachment didn't post, so I can't see anything. Also, just as an FYI, I don't work for Adobe, I'm just a community member volunteering on the fourms.

The windows limit to the path + file name is 254 char. Why has acrobat limited this to about 150?

Adding parentheses around text, linked to slider control

I have a basic understanding of expressions and I thought this was simple enough but I'm stumped. I have several text layers of numbers with their source texts all linked to sliders in a single control layer for convenience. I can modify the expressions to add a $ or % before or after the text but I want to put the text between parentheses, like this: (12)

How would one write the expression to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Ah, thank you for posting both of those. What version of AME are you running? There was a recent bug with the Adaptive High Bitrate preset that turned your quality to junk. Look at the bottom-left of your screenshots and you can see your original one has an estimated file size of 7 MB and the new one has an estimated file size of 143 MB. This is because the target bit rate on the left in the "Output" section at the top is set to .19 Mbps. If you update to the latest version this bug is fixed and you can use the Adaptive High Bitrate preset, which is more flexible.

I would use a checkbox instead of a slider then add this simple expression:

if (effect("Checkbox Control")("Checkbox") == 0) {value} else {"(" + value + ")"}

Click the checkbox and the parentheses will appear. Uncheck it and they will go away. You could name the Checkbox Control Parentheses to keep things clear.

Zoom-in shortcut not working (cmd +)

Hello,

i have the issue that i can't zoom in with cmd+ on my composition.

Every other shortcut is still working, also zoom out with cmd-. Using my trackpad or mousewheel is also working. I tried restart and restoring the preference file but nothing helped so far. The shortcut is working in every other program, so it has to be something inside of AE.

I would be thankful for every help i can get, this drives me nuts.

Thank you for that insight! I’ve been trying to update — but when I try  to it says it is “waiting”   When I call adobe — they tell me there’s a problem they are trying to fix - and nothing further??

Re: Help removing red eyes from short clip

I would add the footage to a new comp, split the layer on the first frame that has the red-eye problem, motion stabilize the shot using the left eye, Add a shape layer and use ellipses to cover the red-eye, then add a null, press "p" to reveal the position property of the null, select the stabilized layer and press "a" to reveal the anchor point of the footage, then add an expression to the position property of the null and drag the Pickwhip to the anchor point of the footage. The last step is to move the CTI to the first frame of the stabilized layer and parent both the stabilized layer and the replacement layer to the null. This will put the motion back in the footage and add the motion to the repair layer. You may have to put a couple of position keyframes on your shape layers to keep them lined up with the eyes. You will also probably have to do a little masking or create a track matte.

If you are new to After Effects you will have to type Stabilize Motion, parenting, and using animation presets in the search help field at the top right corner of AE and so some studying. If you know what you are doing then the entire project will take about 10 minutes.

I had a few minutes to kill while I was rendering a Premiere Pro project so I downloaded your video and made a micro-tutorial. Sorry about the audio. I didn't take the time to go get my mic. The most important part of this tutorial is where I split the clip so I am only working on the frames that need to be fixed.

Enjoy:

You should import your illustrator file as a composition retaining layer sizes.

I suggest you type working with illustrator files in the Search Help field at the top right corner of After Effects and do a little studying in the User Guide.

Your screenshots don't show us anything about your AE comp and you didn't describe the workflow so I'm assuming that you have not worked with AI files before. You should also study up on preparing Illustrator files for Video. There are a lot of things you need to consider.

When you import the layered Illustrator file as a composition you get "two" files in the project panel; the composition and a folder with all the layers in it.   I've found that this happens if you drag all the layers from the folder into the composition.  But if you go into the composition that was created, select and copy all the layers and then paste them back into the composition where you want them they will position themselves correctly.

Hi,

Getting this error when trying to use the render engine, it seems to be very sporadic and I haven't worked out a pattern yet. At any point during a render I can get the following error and it thinks it's completed the render and moves on.

The full line is:

aerender ERROR -609: AESend failed to send Apple event at line 771

Running latest cc and OSX Mojave.

Thanks for all you comments guys, and Rick for your lengthy post and video. I will loose the extern drive(s) (did you mean just move my cache folders to the internal drive or both the Cache and my project/footage). and see how it goes. Will report back.

Many thanks for you post and the video! Rick when you say there might be something wrong with my configuration; do you mean my AE config? or something to do with OSX? If so, what do i look for and how do i resolve. Would restoring AE to its default settings and deleting my Preferences file resolve any potential configuration issues?

I'm having the same problem. See below. For me, it's not an issue with zoom or resolution settings. I've had the same issue before in Illustrator and fixed it by turning off GPU performance. I can't figure out how to do the same thing in AE. If I go to File>Project Settings and try to change the Mercury GPU settings, this doens't do anything.

It looks like you applied the Roughen Edges effect to the text layer.  True?

Media Encoder seems to only start it's counting at 0, making it not a useable option for image-sequence updates.

Why not?  A lot of image sequences start with Frame Zero.
