I'm sorry I don't have AE 2019 installed at the moment due to some technical issues.  When I do get it reinstalled I can take a look.

Keylight Keeps Crashing AE

I applied Keylight to a clip (Sony A7S II MP4) and when I clicked on the color picker to select the color to key out After Effects crashed. I tried restarting my computer and it did the same thing. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the program and the same thing happened. I transcoded the clip to Apple Proress LT and it still crashed. I opened up a new project and imported only the transcoded clip and tried it but it crashed. Everything I have tried has failed and now I can't use Keylight in AE. Is there something I missed that I should have tried or do I have to wait until the next update comes out with some patch fixes?

Number animation with slider control won't render

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with a number animation.

The numbers are in a text layer whose "source text" I linked to a slider control effect (on that same layer) using the pick whip. The slider control has two keyframes: one at value 0 and the other at a given value I want to be the end result (e.g.: 1893, in one case).

I then pasted the following text into the expression to avoid decimal points showing up: Math.round(effect("Slider Control")("Slider"))

The thing is: everything works fine when I preview the video, but is missing when I render it (both as H264 .mp4 and as Quicktime .mov)

It renders as if I only had empty text layers.

Do you know what might be wrong?

I'm using After Effects CC 2019 and Media Encoder CC 2019

Make sure Live Update is selected. You may have to restart AE after making this change.

Could you possibly have your text layer set to be a guide layer?

The 'work area bar' in your project is set to preview the last frame of your animation only. Look up this feature in the After Effects help. It is the lower of the two lighter gray bars at the top of your timeline.  By default Media Encoder will only render the area within the work area - so you are just getting one frame rendered - not your complete animation.

To make the work area bar the full length of your composition, double click  the gray portion in the middle, or drag the two blue 'handles'  to the left and right so it covers the length of your timeline.

With a little effort, Wiggler may be useful to achieve the same effect or at least one similar one.

Animate line in maps

Hi,

I am quite new to After Effects, and I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction on a task I have no idea how to do.

I am trying to animate a line following a drone path I have flown. This is to show people where to walk in the terrain. I have attached an example video from a program I have seen this put to good use. I would like to make the line exactly like that. Anybody have any good tutorials on the matter? If not is there any subjects or topics I could should know to get started on this?

Thanks!

Okay. Going to try tomorrow. But I still dont know why it freezes my PC. My old PC (4GB RAM, some ugly 2core CPU and Intel Graphics) was able to render everything. Now I built a new PC and it can't even render haha

If they want random wiggles for every layer and the wiggle is in the nested comp then they will have to add a way to randomize the random seed in each of the nested comps. The nested comps have one layer so the random seed is going to be the same for each layer.

Personally, I think the OP is overcomplicating the project by about 243 nested comps.

A simple if statement linked to a slider or a checkbox could easily make 243 layers randomize opacity and then stop when the slider or checkbox is keyframed. You could also use a time calculation or a marker or the in or out point of a layer to control when the wiggle stops working.

For example:

if (thisComp.layer("Control").effect("Random Checkbox")("Checkbox") == 1)  {100}

else

wiggle(3, 60)

or if you want to gradually slow down the wiggle:

freq = effect("Slider Control")("Slider");

if (freq > 0)

  {wiggle(freq, 60)}

else 100

If the layers were all shape layers then you could do the entire thing with onje layer:

Rolling Frame transition/Film strip transition

Hi!

I'm trying to achieve an effect that looks like this:

VIDEO COPILOT | After Effects Tutorials, Plug-ins and Stock Footage for Post Production Professionals

Essentially, its for an animation underwater, but I don't care about the layers in between, I'm just trying to get a sort of blur/cross dissolve effect between two pieces of footage, that way it looks like its panning down quickly through the water to give the illusion of great depth.

Ive been messing around with blur and cross dissolve but to no avail.

Is there an easier way to achieve this effect?

Thank you!

Getting a line to accurately follow geometry requires 3rd party solutions. You have to generate a 3D model of the topography, then create a 3D model, then animate a texture on the model. Syntheyes is the tool that I have that I would use to generate the topographic model of the terrain. Syntheyes will run you between $300 and $500. You could use Blender (free - open source) to animate the textured line.

You could fake it with camera tracking if you stick enough reference solids to the surfaces that you track, but the Camera Tracker in AE is going to have a difficult time tracking the surface of something like snow or a grass-covered meadow on a windy day. If you have fairly large areas that are basically on the same plane you could probably do a fairly convincing job with AE's built-in Camera Tracker, some reference solids and a shape layer matched to each solid with a stroked path + trim paths. It all depends on the shot. The sample you provided would be extremely time-consuming to recreate with AE's built-in tools.

To point you in the right direction we need to know what kind of a budget you have and how accurate your line needs to be, and even better, see the actual shot you are trying to use.

I would parent the shots together, animate the position of the parent, then put a feathered mask between the transition. Something like this:

Screenshot_2019-01-22 14.20.17_NJlDH5.png

I made a soft-edged track matte with Wave Warp + Gaussian blur then parented both the above the water and the below the water layer to the track matte. Move the track matte Up and you're looking under water.

If you are using actual footage then matching the perspective of the camera is critical. Perspective is controlled by the camera position. If you the above the water shot was on the horizon and the camera was pointed just above the horizon then the first part of the underwater shot would also need to be pointed slightly up. As soon as you get the underwater shot to fill the frame you can point the camera down to sell the rest of the illusion.

I would make a note of the timing where the snake needs to swallow the lemon. Do the animation on the snake layer.

Did you follow that?

Thanks mo. Sorry for the late response. To answer your question, I used Keylight 1.2 to key out the actor. I also edited the clips from a sequence from premiere and trim composed them into AE for a faster workflow because I have about 35 different clips that needed to be keyed out. 2.) I can see why you are confused by the drawing of the veins. I did confused them with tracking dots. I thought the veins would be easier to track if already drawn in but now I realize it wasn't necessary. Please let me know if I have this correct. So, basically what you're saying is I need to track the arm/body (basically where ever I want the veins to go) in mocha and use that tracking data and parent it to a null? Could I also track the veins separately in Mocha and then align that layer to the surface. Copy that corner pin data to a solid layer? Since there is so many veins it would be quite time consuming to go in with the bezier spline tool and mask out each individual vein right? So when I comp it in do you mean creating a new solid layer with the veins and then precomping it then duplicating it and changing the the track matte to alpha matte?

Could I possibly see a screenshot of thee workflow of the precomped veins layer so I can just have a visual if you still have it or not. It would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime I'll try to figure it out on my own too.

Unspecified Drawing Error when using Puppet Pin Tool

I'm having a recurring issue where I get an error message reading "Unspecified Drawing Error" when I apply a puppet pin to a layer.  It happens on all the layer types that I've tried including Ai files, shape layers, solids, precomps, etc.

I'm on Windows 10 and am using After Effects 16.0.1.

It seems to have something to do with Windows as I can take the same AE project to a Mac and use the puppet pin without issue and it will still work when I bring it back to Windows but as soon I as I try to manipulate the puppet effect I get the same error and have to delete the instance of the effect to continue working.

Edited to add:  I've tried some of the common fixes that I've seen and none have worked so far.  These include resetting to the default AE workspace, closing the audio panel and turning off gpu processing.

After Effects 2019: Expressions Don't Trigger In Precompositions

$

In the latest version of AE 2019, my simple count up expressions aren't working as they should. I have a few text layers in a precomp with slider controls with 'source text' pick whipped up to them; you should know how that works. They count up based on where my slider is. Easy. So why can't I dump twenty of these text layers into a precomp and call it a day and move them around as i see fit?

I've got a macbook specced out to the teeth and am running the most recent version of OSX if that helps.
