Necessary Requirements for After Effects
Hi there,
So I'm hoping to learn a number of new skills in After Effects, but my MacBook Air doesn't really have what it takes under the hood to run the program very well. Rendering anything more than the most basic effects is nearly impossible. I'm hoping to get into beauty work, color work, motion graphics, 2.5D, lighting, etc, and I'm looking to buy a new computer in order to learn these things.
I've seen this page: https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Adobe-After-Effects-144/H ardware-Recommendations. But I'm wondering what popular consumer computers meet these requirements. I'm especially hoping to buy a Mac, and even hoping to buy a laptop, but if that won't work, then I'll take any recommendations. What relatively simple computers can handle After Effects?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) while the application is starting.

Re: After effects keeps changing imported AI graphics
The AI to AE pipeline can be finicky at times if you don't know all of its quirks. There are a variety of things that don't transfer over, most notably opacity and blending modes.
If you imported layers at layer size and made any changes to the original AI file that would alter layer dimensions, the anchor point and position will technically be the same in AE, but will look different. You have to keep in mind that those properties are somewhat relative (position is dependent on anchor point, and anchor point is dependent on the layer size), so changing anything after the fact can lead to undesired results.
You said you haven't changed anything in the AI file, though.... If you re-import the original AI file into a new comp (let's go with document size this time, just to be safe), and apply some of the same effects... what happens? If you can get it working as expected like this, you might be able to do a quick rebuild by just bringing in the "broken" parts like this, and parenting them to the old versions (which have the right values, but don't look right any longer - correct?)
Do you maybe have another version of the same file (with same name) that AE might actually be linking to?
One other thought - if you're using precomps and the Collapse Transformations switch, that can lead to trouble, especially when mixed with certain effects. Is this the case? If so, it might be helpful to turn off all your effects, and troubleshoot one-by-one to see if it's actually one of those that's causing your troubles.
If none of these is the answer, would you be able to post some screenshots?

Crazy as it might seem, this fixed the issue for me as well. Caps lock on - anything I import to AE was black. Caps lock off, everything imports perfect and is visible.

I have had an identical problem, with a GTX 1050. After being on the phone with Adobe customer care, we deduced that the problem is in fact the graphics card-- 0mb is currently being used by the nvidia card for dedicated system memory. I then got in contact with NVIDIA and after going through all the troubleshooting steps with them they couldn't figure it out either, and simply suggested a fresh os install (which I had already done) and purchasing a Quadro card. Very disappointing, as I was using the card and premiere/after effects flawlessly within the first months of purchasing the laptop. Any additional help regarding the 0mb dedicated system memory would be appreciated, I keep coming up empty.

I'm on a later version of AE but I cannot reproduce your bug. When you select the yellow colored triangle do you get the connector to the opacity slider?
If the connector is still tied to the red triangle then you do not have the yellow triangle selected. The triangles on both ends of the connector will be the same color.
Your CS6 should be up to date. I don't remember if there were bugs in early builds of that version.

OCIO/ACES color management
Hi guys. I'm trying to wrap my head around color management with OCIO and ACES.
I watched a tutorial about photorealism where he talked about filmic color profile in blender It started a 3 hour research session into color mangement. I learned that sRGB is limited in its range and OCIO (includes ACES color profile) is much wider and therefore much better at producing physically realistic renders.

Sporadic Inverted Bars When Applying 'Selective Color'
I've been having this issue when keying the green screen out of a series of videos where applying 'selective color' seems to cause these sporadic inverted bars. The bars seem to be random in location and number. Each instance only lasts for one frame. Each video usually has three or so frames that look like this. The bars appear while editing and after rendering. The bars seem to be generated by the selective color effect. The green screen set up was not super professional, and I really need to use selective color to effectively key out the green screen, I'm also just curious if anyone else has had this happen to their videos and if they were able to solve it. It's been happening consistently to 30 or so videos. Please let me know if anyone has encountered this before or if you know what to do.

Mike I did the ctrl+alt+shift and deleted my preferences. I close AE and reopened, created new composition. Added Colorama to a solid and still have the problem.

Hi TimSx. In your project, you have to understand the AE's render pipeline. As I have suspected, you have applied a Levels effect to your Water Texture precomp. After Effects, uses the original layer as it is: a comp without effects. If you want the effects to be part of your composition you have 2 option:
1.- To precomp again transferring the effects to the new comp. Then CC Glass will look exactly the same using any of the sources.
2.- Use the new option in the latest release that allows you to refer to other layers including their masks and applied effects. This can be done in CC2017 v14.2. If you are not using the latest version, the only way to do it is step 1.
Look at the attached image to understand what I'm trying to say.

Rick When I click on the yellow triangle I get the yellow opacity bar but as soon as start dragging the yellow triangle it jumps back to the red triangle in its place. I click on the blue triangle the blue opacity bar shows up but if I start dragging on the blue triangle the red triangle moves in its place. thanks

Replacing "solid" layer with video without distortion; Recreating Parks and Rec Opening
I am trying to recreate the Parks and Recreation opening for my organization, and replace the moving squares or frames with our own footage. After getting all squares animated to how I like it, I want to replace them with videos moving around. I thought selecting the square I want replaced, holding down "alt" and dragging the content to the place holder would do the trick but the video is just showing up distorted and not even in the shape of the solid layer it was meant to replace! I have thought about pre-cropping all of the videos before importing them to AE but the additional software cost more money and there has to be easier way, right? PLS HELP

Hi Asimzb,
After Effects' performance depends on many things: your system, your footage, etc. Not all combinations of hardware and software can give the best results.
It sounds like your expectations can be better met with smart rendering and Premiere Pro where if effects are prerendered in one codec and then exported in the same codec, it is a fast process to export. The same thing does not occur with cached frames in After Effects. Sorry about that. You can always give feedback to the team here.
