You may need to try a different graphics driver.

Yes... Find Edges; however, the line quality won't be as nice as the Text Stroke on a 2.5D AE Layer using the Classic 3D Renderer.

The above is all AE.

I'm thinking that a better approach would be to jump over to Cinema 4D.  Or Plexus in AE if you have OBJ file of the text to work with.

This is close! Any way to have the extrusion edges stroked as well?

Many ways to make extrusion in AE:

1. C4D renderer

2. Shatter effect

3. C4D Live 3D Pipeline

I would start with C4D Renderer because it's fairly simple and keeps everything native in Ae.

1. set the text as 3D. switch to the C4D renderer. add extrusion in the geometry options

2. create two point lights to define the edges properly

3.add an adjustment layer with find edges set to invert

4. add minimax for thicker edges. set to maximum and Alpha and Color. the lights will effect the quality of edges you get so you can adjust the lights if needed

How can I have smoother preview rendering in After Effects?

I am working on an Alienware desktop.

It has:

8700K Processor

64 gb of ram

Gtx 1080

OS is on SM 961 NVMe Samsung 1024 GB

Cache files set to TOSHIBA DT01ACA100

I am animating 3D graphics.

The system takes about 4/5 seconds for each frame.

How can I improve my preview rendering?

I turned on the transparency grid, but I couldn't find the cause. But in the project panel, theres a thin black line about where the steam gets cut off but I have no idea what's causing it. Here's a picture of the transparency grid and the effects applied to each layer.

For the "[ramen cup] composition layer, the only effects that are applied to it are the changed to the position of the cup.

So I tried to look at each individual layer to identify the problem. I'm still having trouble even finding the problem layer. When I activated the transparency grid, I noticed in the project panel that there is a thin line running vertically about where the steam gets cut off. The problem is that I can't tell whats creating that line.

I have screenshots in the comment above of all of the effects applied to each layer and the transparency grid itself. here I attached the "ramen cup" composition.

gg comp.png

For my workflow:

1.) I created the cup via Illustrator.

2.) then I imported it into AE

3.) I created a separate composition for all of the components of the cup and created key frames simultaneously for all the layers to make the cup look like it was being dropped to the ground.

4.) then I created a graphic called "peeling top" where I created a vector and applied a CC Page Turn effect to it in order to make it look like the top was peeling off

5.) then I added another shape layer called "Shape Layer1" and created key frames for the position and added a ripple effect in order to make it look like water was being poured into the cup.

6.) then I created the steam effect by creating a null object, creating key frames for the position, and having the five "steam layer" shape layers parented to it

-the only thing that I did for those five shape layers was create key frames for the size and position

I see the Ramin Cup comp selected but I do not see any screenshots of the Ramin cup layer.

If you created the Ramin Cup in AI and the elements you wanted to animate were all on separate layers I would have just imported the AI file as a comp instead of importing all the elements.

Did you try soloing layers and looking for the black line? Did you try opening up individual layers in the Footage panel? The black line could be coming from anywhere. Dig through the layers until you find it or post a link to the AI file so someone here can take a look. The problem is probably with the AI file, not with anything you are doing in AE.

Just one more note on your design. I see a bunch of really thin lines. These do not work well in Video production. Minimum line width in AI for a line that is going to move is usually 3 or 4 points (pixels). Any thinner and the lines will tend to look like they are vibrating when they are moving.

This helped me. Thank you so much.

Such a corner case key move... I would never have sought that behine left square brace hahaha

That could be a very normal render time.  What are you doing in your comp?  Lights?  Effects?  Anything altering time?

I unistalled my Graphic Card and GPU drivers completely and then reinstalled the Nvidia drivers. After Effects still wont run. The error also occurs while in Windows--Safe mode.

Already open the preview panel in Window > Preview, and change the settings?

Yes, 3D took time. Try change preview settings to quarter on preview panel, and skip 1-2 frames.

Hummm, you have a desktop? Already try open without your GPU? You can open another adobe applications like Photoshop, Premiere?

I think the problem is the AI file. The steam is inside of artboard? All graphics must be inside. resize artboard and save. Also, try create "shape from layers", and delete the (group 1) it's a square mask created by AE who cause this.

As guys said - it can be normal, all depends on your setup. How compicated is your composition, how many and how complicated 3d models you have in there, how many lights, how many and what effects, what camera work you have, did you turned on DOF. And also what kind of 3D generating you are using: plugins like Element 3D or ProAnimator, raytracing or E3D or maby something different.
All of that is and can be crucial in determining render speed but if you have what you have in your composition and you are sure that you can't change anything in your composition to make it less labor intensive for your computer - only thing you can do is to lower your preview resolution, make your composition skip frames during preview and make sure that your CPU is not doing anything else in bacground when you try to render.

I concur with the others.  Also make sure your cache isn't full and that you RAM allocation is 75% of your total RAM.  Keep in mind that you don't always need to preview at final quality with all effects.  You just want to see that all your timing and spatial relationships are good.  You don't necessarily need to see things like motion blur, DOF and color correction in real time preview.  Turn all the bells and whistles off until you're ready to render.

That is why I said -

"if you have what you have in your composition and you are sure that you can't change anything in your composition to make it less labor intensive for your computer"

If someone goes to 3D in AE I'm guessing that know what he is doing and know that for preview purposes know that can turn of many of the effects and know how should work with 3D and what is asking is how to watch/preview smoothly animation with al bells and whistles turned on. If I'm mistaken and we are talking with someone that does not know proper workflow in AE - your advice is correct and first I would send that person to AE basics before he start to work with complex 3D compositions.
